**********     Special Program Note     **********

This year, we are very proud to have two of the most respected patent specialists and scholars in the world, The Honorable Randall R. Rader, Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and Professor Martin J. Adelman, Director of the Intellectual Property Law Program of the George Washington University Law School, offering a whole week of advanced patent courses tackling some of the most pressing challenges the world is facing today.  In addition, this year's program will focus on technology transfer and e-commerce related issues.   The program indeed very appreciate their ardent support and will maintain its tradition of getting the highest possible caliber of speakers.

   Second Sino-U.S. Conference on Intellectual Property Rights and  Economic Development (May 11-14, 1999, Shanghai, People's Republic of China)

    In collaboration with the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR), and  to continue the successful conferences and workshops organized in Chongqing in 1998, the Asia Pacific Legal Institute will once again organize a Workshop on Sino-U.S. Intellectual Property Protection, this time for the Chinese southeast region. This workshop is based on and expanded from a mock trial APLI organized in 1995 during a delegation visit to the Chinese Southwest University of Political Science and Law in Chongqing, China and will involve a significant local participation with speakers and trainers from the highest caliber.  The goal of this training program is to further enhance the awareness of better protection of intellectual property rights and explore many practical challenges, both procedural and substantive, that confront the current legal system in China, the United States and elsewhere in the world.  More than 200 senior government officials, judges, administrators, professionals and graduate students are expected to participate.


  Conference on Technology Transfer and Progress in China
   
(November 3-5, 1998, Beijing, People's Republic of China)

    The president and executive director of the Asia Pacific Legal Institute are invited to deliver two major reports on the development of a sound legal infrastructure for technology transfer and implementation of the Technology Progress Law and Technology Results Transfer Law.  As a part of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) projects, this conference is co-sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and the China International Centre for Economic and Technical Exchanges.


  Semi-Annual Conference and Board Meeting of the Intellectual Property Society of Chinese Universities (November 6-10, Xiaman, People's Republic of China)

    The Asia Pacific Legal Institute is invited to participate two critical meetings of this major intellectual property group in China, including the delivery of a keynote speech and the planning of the Society's 9th Biennial National Conference.


  Sino-U.S. Conference on Intellectual Property Rights and Economic Development (September 16-18, Chongqing, People's Republic of China)

    In collaboration with the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR), the Asia Pacific Legal Institute organized a Workshop on Sino-U.S. Intellectual Property Protection for the Chinese southwest region.
This workshop is based on and expanded from a mock trial APLI organized in 1995 during a delegation visit to the Chinese Southwest University of Political Science and Law in Chongqing, China.  The goal of this training
program is to further enhance the awareness of better protection of intellectual property rights and explore many practical challenges, both procedural and substantive, that confront the current legal system in China, the United States and elsewhere in the world.  More than 150 senior government officials, judges, administrators, professionals and graduate students participated.  APLI will continue this collaboration with NBR in organizing two similar workshops in Shanghai and Beijing in 1999 and 2000, respectively.

 * WIPO Asian Regional Symposium: Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights under the TRIPS Agreement (June 1-3, 1998, Hong Kong)

    APLI will actively participate in this conference as a non-governmental international organization with a delegation comprises of senior government officials, judges, scholars, practitioners, and business representatives around the world. Sponsored by: World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) with the cooperation of the Intellectual Property Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.
